Umbilical Hernia Repair

Umbilical Hernia Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical repair of umbilical hernias, which occur when tissue protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall at the umbilicus (belly button). Umbilical hernias are common in both children and adults, and surgical repair is typically recommended when they cause symptoms or are at risk for complications.

Our evaluation includes a physical examination to assess the size of the hernia and whether it can be reduced (pushed back in). We discuss the risks and benefits of surgical repair, which is typically recommended for symptomatic hernias, hernias that are enlarging, or hernias that cannot be reduced. In adults, umbilical hernias rarely close on their own and often require surgical repair.

We perform both open and laparoscopic umbilical hernia repair. For smaller hernias, we may use a simple suture repair, while larger hernias typically require mesh reinforcement to reduce the risk of recurrence. Laparoscopic repair offers benefits including smaller incisions and potentially faster recovery. Our surgeons are experienced in managing complex cases including large umbilical hernias and those associated with diastasis recti (separation of the abdominal muscles).
