Splenectomy

Splenectomy Services
Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides splenectomy (spleen removal) for a variety of conditions including trauma, blood disorders, splenic tumors, and certain autoimmune conditions. The spleen plays an important role in filtering blood and fighting infection, but removal may be necessary when it becomes enlarged, damaged, or diseased.
Our evaluation includes a comprehensive assessment of the indication for splenectomy, review of imaging studies, and coordination with hematologists or other specialists when appropriate. We assess the size and condition of the spleen, presence of accessory spleens, and any associated conditions. For elective cases, we ensure patients receive appropriate vaccinations before surgery to reduce the risk of post-splenectomy infection.
We perform both laparoscopic and open splenectomy procedures. Laparoscopic splenectomy is our preferred approach for most elective cases, offering benefits including smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications. We are skilled in managing complex cases including massive splenomegaly, splenic trauma, and cases requiring concomitant procedures. We provide comprehensive post-operative care including infection prevention counseling and monitoring.
