Parathyroidectomy

Parathyroidectomy Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides parathyroidectomy (parathyroid gland removal) for patients with hyperparathyroidism, a condition where one or more parathyroid glands produce too much parathyroid hormone, leading to elevated blood calcium levels. Our surgeons work closely with endocrinologists to provide comprehensive care for this condition.

Our evaluation includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, symptoms, and laboratory studies including calcium and parathyroid hormone levels. We utilize imaging studies such as sestamibi scans, ultrasound, and sometimes CT scans to localize the abnormal parathyroid gland(s). We work in collaboration with endocrinologists to determine the most appropriate surgical approach.

We perform both focused (minimally invasive) and traditional four-gland exploration parathyroidectomy. For patients with a clearly localized abnormal gland, we can perform a focused procedure through a small incision, which offers faster recovery. We use intraoperative parathyroid hormone monitoring to confirm successful removal of the abnormal gland(s). Our surgeons are experienced in managing complex cases including multiple gland disease, ectopic parathyroid glands, and revision surgery.
