Parastomal Hernia

Parastomal Hernia Repair

Parastomal Hernia Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical repair of parastomal hernias, which occur adjacent to an ostomy (colostomy or ileostomy) site. These hernias develop when the abdominal wall weakens around the stoma, allowing tissue to protrude. Parastomal hernias are common complications of ostomy surgery and can cause significant problems with stoma function and appliance management.

Our evaluation includes a thorough assessment of the hernia, stoma function, and impact on quality of life. We review the patient's history including the indication for the original ostomy and any previous hernia repairs. We work closely with enterostomal therapists to understand the impact on stoma care and appliance management. Imaging studies may be used to better understand the hernia anatomy.

We offer several repair techniques including local repair, mesh reinforcement, and stoma relocation when necessary. The choice of technique depends on the size of the hernia, stoma function, and patient factors. We typically use mesh reinforcement to provide strength and reduce the risk of recurrence. Our surgeons are experienced in managing complex cases and work to preserve stoma function while repairing the hernia.
