Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease

Gastroesophageal Reflux Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) when medical management is insufficient or patients prefer a surgical solution. Our surgeons perform fundoplication procedures to restore the natural barrier between the stomach and esophagus, preventing acid reflux and its complications.

Our evaluation includes a comprehensive assessment of your symptoms, response to medical therapy, and diagnostic studies including upper endoscopy, pH monitoring, and esophageal manometry. We work closely with gastroenterologists to ensure that surgical intervention is appropriate and that other conditions have been properly evaluated. We discuss the risks, benefits, and expected outcomes of surgery with each patient.

We perform both laparoscopic and open fundoplication procedures, with laparoscopic Nissen fundoplication being our most common approach. This minimally invasive technique involves wrapping the upper portion of the stomach around the lower esophagus to create a valve mechanism. Laparoscopic fundoplication offers excellent outcomes with reduced pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster recovery compared to open surgery. We also perform partial fundoplication procedures when indicated.
