Femoral Hernia Repair

Femoral Hernia Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical repair of femoral hernias, which occur when tissue protrudes through the femoral canal in the upper thigh, just below the inguinal ligament. Femoral hernias are less common than inguinal hernias but have a higher risk of complications such as strangulation, making prompt surgical repair important.

Our evaluation includes a thorough physical examination to identify the hernia and assess for any signs of complications. Femoral hernias are more common in women and may present as a bulge in the upper thigh or groin area. We use imaging studies when needed to confirm the diagnosis and plan the surgical approach. Due to the higher risk of strangulation with femoral hernias, we typically recommend prompt surgical repair.

We perform both open and laparoscopic femoral hernia repair. The surgical approach depends on the size of the hernia, whether it is incarcerated or strangulated, and patient factors. We use mesh reinforcement to reduce the risk of recurrence. Our surgeons are experienced in managing complex cases including incarcerated or strangulated femoral hernias, which require urgent surgical intervention.
