Esophageal and Stomach Cancer

Esophageal and Stomach Cancer Services
Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides comprehensive surgical treatment for esophageal and stomach (gastric) cancer. Our experienced surgeons work as part of a multidisciplinary team including medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, and gastroenterologists to provide coordinated, evidence-based care for patients with these complex malignancies.
Our evaluation process includes comprehensive staging with endoscopy, CT scans, PET scans, and endoscopic ultrasound to determine the extent of disease. We participate in tumor board conferences where all specialists review each case to develop the most appropriate treatment plan. This may include neoadjuvant chemotherapy or chemoradiation before surgery, followed by surgical resection, and adjuvant therapy as indicated.
We perform esophagectomy and gastrectomy procedures using both open and minimally invasive techniques. Our surgeons are skilled in advanced reconstructive techniques including gastric pull-up and intestinal interposition for esophageal reconstruction. We utilize modern surgical approaches including laparoscopic and robotic-assisted techniques when appropriate, which can offer benefits including reduced blood loss, less postoperative pain, and faster recovery while maintaining oncologic outcomes.
