Epigastric Hernia

Epigastric Hernia Repair

Epigastric Hernia Services

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical repair of epigastric hernias, which occur in the upper abdomen between the breastbone and the navel. These hernias develop through small defects in the abdominal wall where blood vessels pass through. Epigastric hernias are often small but can cause discomfort and may enlarge over time.

Our evaluation includes a physical examination to identify the hernia and assess its size. Epigastric hernias may be asymptomatic or cause pain, especially with activities that increase abdominal pressure. We discuss the risks and benefits of surgical repair, which is typically recommended for symptomatic hernias or those that are enlarging. Small asymptomatic hernias may be observed, but surgical repair is often recommended to prevent complications.

We perform both open and laparoscopic epigastric hernia repair. For smaller hernias, we may use a simple suture repair, while larger hernias typically require mesh reinforcement. The surgical approach is tailored to the size and characteristics of the hernia. Our surgeons use meticulous techniques to ensure a strong repair and minimize the risk of recurrence.
