Bowel Obstruction

Bowel Obstruction Services
Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides surgical treatment for bowel obstruction, a condition where the normal flow of intestinal contents is blocked. Bowel obstructions can be caused by adhesions (scar tissue), hernias, tumors, inflammatory conditions, or other causes. Our surgeons are experienced in both conservative management and surgical intervention for these conditions.
Our evaluation includes a thorough assessment of symptoms, physical examination, and imaging studies including CT scans and X-rays to identify the location and cause of the obstruction. We determine whether the obstruction is partial or complete, and whether there are signs of compromised blood supply (strangulation) which would require urgent surgery. We work closely with gastroenterologists and radiologists to develop the most appropriate treatment plan.
Initial management often includes bowel rest, nasogastric tube decompression, and IV fluids. When surgery is necessary, we perform both laparoscopic and open procedures to relieve the obstruction. This may involve lysis of adhesions (cutting scar tissue), hernia repair, bowel resection, or other procedures depending on the cause. We utilize minimally invasive techniques when appropriate, which can reduce recovery time and complications. For patients with recurrent obstructions due to adhesions, we employ techniques to minimize future adhesion formation.
