Appendicitis

Appendicitis Services
Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides prompt surgical treatment for appendicitis, an inflammation of the appendix that requires urgent medical attention. Appendicitis is one of the most common surgical emergencies, and our surgeons are available to provide timely treatment to prevent complications such as rupture and peritonitis.
Our evaluation includes a thorough assessment of symptoms, physical examination focusing on signs of appendicitis, and diagnostic imaging including CT scans or ultrasound when needed. We work quickly to establish the diagnosis and determine whether the appendix has ruptured, as this affects the treatment approach. Our surgeons coordinate with emergency department physicians to ensure rapid evaluation and treatment.
We perform laparoscopic appendectomy, which is our preferred approach for most cases of appendicitis. This minimally invasive technique uses small incisions and a camera to remove the appendix, resulting in less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of wound infection compared to open surgery. Most patients can go home within 24 hours and return to normal activities within a week. For cases of ruptured appendicitis with abscess formation, we may use a staged approach with initial drainage followed by interval appendectomy.
