Adrenalectomy

Columbia Surgical Specialists - General Surgery provides adrenalectomy (adrenal gland removal) for patients with adrenal tumors, hyperfunctioning adrenal conditions, or adrenal cancer. The adrenal glands produce important hormones, and removal may be necessary when they become diseased or produce excessive hormones. Our surgeons work closely with endocrinologists to provide comprehensive care.

Our evaluation includes a comprehensive review of your medical history, symptoms, and hormonal evaluation to determine if the adrenal gland is producing excessive hormones. We utilize imaging studies including CT scans and MRI to assess the size and characteristics of adrenal tumors. We work in collaboration with endocrinologists to determine the most appropriate treatment approach, which may include medical management or surgical removal.

We perform both laparoscopic and open adrenalectomy, with laparoscopic being our preferred approach for most cases. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy offers benefits including smaller incisions, less pain, faster recovery, and shorter hospital stay. We are experienced in managing complex cases including large tumors, pheochromocytomas requiring special preoperative preparation, and bilateral adrenalectomy. Our surgeons work closely with anesthesiologists to ensure safe perioperative management, especially for patients with hormonally active tumors.
